“It starts with YOU. It stays with HIM.”
As a way of giving back, I’m donating a dollar for every book sold to the White Ribbon Campaign to help put an end to violence against women from across the world. Not much, but it’s all I can afford.
When I was younger, I used to think it well to open a women’s shelter if ever I became a millionaire growing up (yeah, right). I realized, however, that I didn’t need to be rich to do something good. I only needed to make a choice and go with it. Ridiculous was the opportunity I had been waiting for.
You might ask, Why not “your own cause”? This is one of the most difficult things that I’m ever going to write (ha, damn tears). I’d rather never walk again than to see another woman raped and abused.
My heart breaks every time I’m reminded of my inability to protect others. I can only watch on as their drops of sadness inevitably fall, the resonating echoes from my foolish imagination. I feel guilty that I can’t even save myself. I can’t live without hope, even for just one little girl whom no one answered. She’s my redemption from the limitations I never chose.
And truth be told, it’s the least I can do. Women usually protect me, from spiders and mosquitoes, even angry puppies and butterflies! Between my mother, sister, aunts, and nurses, women are my cause because without them, I wouldn’t even be here.
“The White Ribbon Campaign (WRC) is the largest effort in the world of men working to end violence against women (VAW). In over fifty-five countries, campaigns are led by both men and women, even though the focus is on educating men and boys. In some countries it is a general public education effort focused on ending violence against women.”
